@Eduardo Jezierski: Thanks for the links -- I like building blocks too and there are some in the list. I'll certainly consider FireEagle once it gets past beta. Another criteria is that the site has enough information on it for EDs and DDs to make a decision on it. Right now FireEagle doesn't exactly have that yet ;)

You might want to tell us more about instedd.org too. I covered it at: http://www.nonprofittechblog.org/twitter-and-facebook-for-humanitarian-purposes but perhaps there's new information you might want to share?

@Allan - Absolutely right. FireEagle is more of a 'building block' rather than an end to end solution.

Scenarios: For example, in the ever-present issues of 'who's doing what where', or when a foreign NGO worker arrives in a new place and his/her list of aquaintances in the area is slim, imagine being able to get information about the area, about other people in the area, have notifications go to SMS phones in the communities, etc. Not sure whether these are the scenarios DD are looking for every day or not..

Some relevant links that might shed more light on scenarios we are envisioning:

@Michael Dorausch: It looks like the Bad Behavior plug-in I use thought Digg was some bot going through my links. It's fixed now so Digg away!

@Eduardo Jezierski: By FireEagle, I'm assuming you mean the Yahoo location-based service? It looks FireEagle is pretty cool, but one of criteria for being on the list is that the technology has to have a scenario for EDs and Development Directors to grab a hold of. If you wouldn't mind sharing a scenario as how it could be used, that would be great. Just thinking about it, it could be used for disaster recovery programs (GPS-based inventory tracking) but I think I'd have to recommend a whole slew of other technologies just to get it to work...

This is an excellent list of resources. Tried to submit to Digg but received "bad link" messages.

Good info thanks a lot!
Hey you might also consider FireEagle in the emergent techs list - if they are as open as they seem to be about their data and allow simple application development scenarios, it could become a useful tool for non-profits with complex logistics scenarios.

I live and die by meebo. News today is their partnership with AOL and the upcoming release of Open AIM. Should make for some fun new features.
