Salesforce now lets you share data with your fellow Salesforce tenants

Techcrunch mentioned yesterday that Salesforce will now let “tenants” on the Salesforce platform share data with one another. Let’s hope that this extends to non-profits already using Salesforce. The impact for non-profits? Non-profits can now sit down in a circle, hold hands, sing Kumbaya AND share their data with one another. It’s going to be a slow process but it WILL happen. It also means that governmental agencies and nonprofits can all be on the same platform. Those of you who have to use the HUD Annual Progress Report (APR) would probably love to see this shared as a simple Apex application that allowed for instantaneous transmission of the data to the relevant government agency, that is, if you can get HUD to be on Salesforce. No matter — the open API of Salesforce can allow for that to still happen but this is just “easier” as less programing would be invoved.

How great would that be? Here in New York, I can imagine it being used as a way to create an HMIS (Homeless Management Information System) that would be spread over multiple non-profits so that they could share eviction prevention information with one another. It would certainly beat the faxes (yes, faxes!) that are still being sent from one non-profit to another. I’m sure there are even more applications if non-profits were willing to share data. The major announcement will be tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing more… like not having to pay the $100/month that they’ll be charging people to have this.

Update (12/6/2007): Salesforce Foundation anticipates that nonprofits will not have to pay $100 a month and that they will receive the usual nonprofit discount of 80% which comes out $240/year.
