Picked up off the dailytech.com RSS feed — Google.org is hiring. Yeah, it’s a .org with pretensions of profit.
Check out the NY Times’ coverage of Google.org. Google.org is headed by Dr. Larry Brilliant (I kid you not). His reasoning as to why Google.org is a hybrid for-profit with a non-profit foundation behind it:
Dr. Brilliant likens the traditional structure of corporate foundations to a musician confined to playing only the high register on a piano. “Google.org can play on the entire keyboard,†Dr. Brilliant said in an interview. “It can start companies, build industries, pay consultants, lobby, give money to individuals and make a profit.â€
In my interview with Alexander Salzman, he refers to that quote above when asked why rethos is a for-profit. I suspect “playing the piano” will be the new riff (ok ok pun intended) as to why new social ventures aren’t filing for 501c3 status. So get your fingers ready to do some piano playing (in Mountain View, California that is)
