I try not to install TOO MUCH stuff as the UI for my blog can't really handle it. As it is, I'm more concerned with what I have to take away from the sidebar than what I have to add. That said, I'm looking to remove the Meebo widget as it's not being used enough (maybe 1 convo every week now). I don't have enough eyeballs to make it worthwhile. I'm more interested in upping my posting frequency and providing more comprehensive articles. The polls and ratings are all Wordpress plugins. I like the plug-ins more than widgets because WP plug-ins are a lot more customizable and already fit within the WP admin screens. Widgets like Meebo are "out there" in that they're not directly managed by WP...

I've been writing about widgets and wrote about this one last week

One thing I've learned so far that you have to promote the poll beyond just your blog side bar and it helps to connect it to content.

This is a great example of using the audience poll widget to build a relationship with your reader.

I went crazy with widgets and installed the meebo one ...
