Oh the things I'll do for a hot breakfast... Of course, this isn't an us vs. them issue. The NTC works for the most part. It's just that I come from the social service sector and tend to have a client-focused approach. In this case, it's the IT Directors and tech workers that are the clients and if anything, I want something less vendor-focused and more professionally oriented, perhaps more like a Bar Association meeting. It's a chance to do something neat and different. And yes, I'll moderate some of those sessions, particularly IT ethics.

Hooray, Allan.

I was waiting for your post :-) And no worries - we want to hear from you all. N-TEN is this community and if you do not have a voice and a network of peers to turn to, exchange information with, and learn something, we should not be around...it is, after all, the 'conversation, stupid' (as my friend David Weinberger is known to have said).

So, thanks -- and for all readers here wondering, here is Allan's pic:

I appreciate the view, for sure; it's a criticism N-TEN has heard in the past, I believe. However, I do not believe that this needs to be an us versus them approach. I think you say as much, referencing an 'ecology' and also smaller vendors and/or service providers like Sinu or Democracy in Action, etc - some of which are nonprofits themselves. There are vendors of all ilks - great, good, not so good, large, and a whole lot of small ones. Also, I'll look up the exact numbers for the NTC in Seattle but we all, working for nonprofits in various ITC capacities, VASTLY outnumbered vendors - even if you count consultants in that mix.

That said, I appreciate the sentiment for 'spaces' for affinity communities to meet and exchange views frankly and freely. Holly and I are rethinking the way in which the NTC is structured so that much more of that can happen -- formally and informally.

I love ideas that you and others might have to that end - thinks that you have seen other places, or like to see at the next NTC. In addition to session ideas, we have heard a few already - poster sessions, peer reviews, round tables, affinity group meet-ups, focused dine-arounds, you name it -- keep them coming! We have an entire large hotel to fill with lots of spaces for these to happen and I am very much looking forward to making the next NTC as lively and as interesting as possible.

I also very much love some of your session ideas - and will definitely recruit you to run at least one of them...

And finally, we'll take the hot breakfast under advisement (though we'll need a sponsor for that to not bust the budget {grin})...

The sessions on leasing and ethics are really good ideas. I'd actually want to attend those.
