Read more about this kickass government 2.0 job in New York City!

Ok, very rarely do I do consulting jobs and I decided a couple of weeks ago to do some part-time consulting for the New York City Campaign Finance Board. My first real step into the non-profit world was in the government sector so at times, it feels like I’m just picking up where I left off ten years ago. While I’m helping them out, they’re also looking for someone to replace their previous Webmaster. Imagine applying all that neat stuff at Netsquared or when Beth talks about social media to New York City politics. See? It’s an unbelievably cool job and you get to live in NYC while you’re at it…

Check this job out:

Government 2.0 Webmaster Needed! Help us get ready for New York City’s biggest local election ever and keep NYC elections transparent and open by maintaining and improving upon the New York City Campaign Finance Board website, http://www.nyccfb.info. We’re looking for a hardcore techie with great communications skills to serve as the webmaster and grand poobah of our online efforts. You will maintain and improve the current website while also serving as an internal evangelist to help keep the CFB at the forefront of government agencies involved with the administration of elections, public disclosure, and voter education. This is your chance to join the new wave of public-service techies who are making public sector websites relevant to the next generation! If you’re a big fan of donor disclosure mashups such as the Federal Elections Commissions maps and opensecrets.org then you’ve come to the right place.

The ideal candidate will be proactive in maintaining the site, improving its navigation and look & feel, and both devising and implementing technical and visual enhancements. Some training in and/or experience using ASP.NET 1.1/2.0 controls is a plus. Must be able to hand-code all web elements—WYSIWYG drag-and-droppers need not apply. We’re also looking to expand our reach into social networking so it would help if you were acquainted with Facebook, Digg, del.icio.us, etc. Of course you’ll need to be an expert user of Dreamweaver and Flash; understand dynamic or active web content, including DHTML and Javascript; and be familiar with AJAX technology such as XHR, XML and JSON.

The position offers excellent benefits and a competitive salary commensurate with experience. A bachelor’s degree and NYC residency are required.

Ok, ok, not APPLICATION development. It’s a fundraising position. If you’re a techie who has got fundraising chops too, the Wikimedia Foundation has got the job for you! This may be the first Development director position that I’ve seen that has called for experience with Internet Relay Chat.

Don’t forget that despite the fact that it IS the Wikimedia Foundation, the job will present an interesting challenge for the tech-savvy fundraiser. They don’t allow scripts that track IP addresses for site analytics on any of Wikimedia’s web properties. Can you raise money on the Web without the ability to track your site traffic or indeed, without cookies? Wikimedia Foundation is already raising money and they’re definitely having an easy time with a simple donations banner and a Paypal donations page. Because of their mission and their popularity, I believe this has got to be one of the most honorable and frankly, easiest fundraising jobs out there. I think Wikimedia is poised for even more fundraising success in this field. They’ve got the Web cred, they’ve got the site traffic, and a great hire will just take them to new heights.

From time to time, I get requests to do CTO or project management jobs on a consulting basis. I can’t do them. I’m already the Executive Director of socialmarkets. However, I’d love to pass the buck (and the bucks) to my readers.

Before I just open up my recommendations to anyone though, I have to do a pretty thorough check on people who would be interested. What follows is my top 10 list of things you should know and practice as a nonprofit technology consultant for web application development. Be aware that this would be a different list if I was writing about network engineering.

You know about Agile and waterfall methodologies and you can describe both their strengths and weaknesses. (And I’m praying and hoping you’re picking Agile for your preferred methodology.)

You’ve worked in the nonprofit sector before (and no, working with a foundation doesn’t count, sorry philanthropoids).

You know Rails or PHP. Nothing wrong with Python but at least try those two languages out. And by knowing Rails, I mean that you at least own the Pickaxe book and know who THE DAVID is. And by PHP, you at least know what a PEAR is and why you can’t eat one.

You have documentation (screenshots, old proposals, manuals) laying around ready for perusal by any interested parties (like me).

You were once a junior coder for at least a year. That’s right, working in the coal mines gives you character. At least that’s what Dad said when he sent you there.

You have a blog that you keep up. And three month gaps between postings don’t count. GRRR.

You read a ton of blogs. Show me your OPML. (And you better know what that means.)

You use MS Project, Basecamp or Unfuddle or better yet, can describe the differences between all the packages.

You can tell me how to keep developers happy. Believe me, not many people know how to do this.

You love test-driven development and will train or hire coders to match that.

And in true Non-Profit Tech Blog tradition, I hereby offer you the 11th thing you should know… You have a great knowledge of the liberal arts and subscribe to numerous arts and design magazines. Ugly code is always ugly but pretty code is at least eye candy for the users.

It’s not so bad — I’m not asking for a perfect match but if you’re hiring a consultant for web application development you should probably adopt these standards now. And no, I’m not advocating a particular technology, just a particular methodology. And you as a prospective employer, can take this with a grain of salt but I suggest that adoption of these points in your shop will get you much of the way towards a state-of-2005 approach to software development. Being two years behind isn’t bad, but 10 years — well, we’ll have to talk then.

So if you’re in the NYC area and want to gain a little bit of my mindshare when I’m asked for recommendations, hit me up at abenamer['at']nonprofittechblog.org.
