In American English, we typically do not use the word &quot;Doctor&quot; as a form of address for people who have doctorates outside the medical profession.  For example, I have a doctorate in religion, and on the rare occasion someone uses &quot;Doctor&quot; to address me it sounds so strange I always correct it.
