06.26.06New blog! Oh how true!Check out the new blog, Today I Cried. The poor IT Manager is going through a tough love scenario with the office's Exchange server. It's a nightmare scenario that I luckily avoided by moving straight to Exchange 2003 and skipping Exchange 2000. As for the rest of the blog, it's true. If you happen to be in a smaller non-profit under 20, you shouldn't have any IT people. Over that, there's no choice but to have one. 06.26.06Midas and Croesus — together at last…I'm not even sure how to say this but Warren G. Buffett has promised to give 85% of his entire wealth to the Gates Foundation. It looks like Fortune broke the news yesterday. Mr. Buffett plans to give away 85 percent of his fortune, or about $37.4 billion, all in Berkshire stock. Of that amount, he will channel the greatest share, about $31 billion, into the Gates Foundation. The Gates Foundation, dedicated to improving health and education, especially in poor nations, is already the United States' largest grant-making foundation, with current assets of almost $30 billion. 06.23.06N-TEN NTC – Send in the nerds!So last night, I attended the N-TEN Summer Smoke-Out Tour. Katrin Verclas, the new N-TEN ED, and Bill Lester, who sits on N-TEN's board, were there fielding sheets of paper upon which were printed a comic-book style dialogue bubble where we were to write in what we wanted to say about N-TEN. 06.22.06IT Recipe for the small non-profitOk, I'm back and in full effect! All of my experiences with the non-profits in Egypt reinforced some long-held notions I have about how small non-profits here in the US should deal with IT. The major issue is this: smaller nonprofits rarely have IT as their core competence. In fact, they probably shouldn't be touching IT as most likely it will be someone inexperienced and liable to make expensive mistakes.
